BC renter's tax credit for 2026: who qualifies
The BC renter's tax credit is a refundable credit of up to $400 a year for eligible renters in British Columbia. It's claimed on your personal tax return, and it's easy to miss.
The 2026 thresholds
For the 2026 tax year, the full credit is available when adjusted income is up to $66,189. It reduces above that amount and is fully phased out at $86,189.
Who qualifies
You need to have rented an eligible home in BC for at least six months of the year and paid the rent. On 31 December you must be a BC resident, and either 19 or older, a parent, or living with a spouse or common-law partner. Owning the home you live in, or renting from a related person, doesn't count.
How to claim it
It's claimed on form BC479 with your T1 return. Keep your rental agreement and proof of rent paid in case CRA asks.
